Study Title | Short chain fatty acid (SCFA) analysis in a bioreactor model system exposed to PFAS and bisphenols. |
Study Summary | An in vitro bioreactor model system based on the simplified human microbiome model (SIHUMIx) was used to investigate the direct effects of either perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) or bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) or a combined mixture on the microbiota. To determine any changes in the main fermentation products of the bacterial cultures three short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were analyzed, namely acetate butyrate and propionate. Only the PFAS exposed cultures showed a significant increase in the concentrations of acetate (KW-test P= 0.0431) and butyrate (KW-test P= 0.0158) during exposure. In none of the exposure cultures nor in the control did the concentration of propionate change significantly. |

Treatment:
Treatment ID: | TR003157 |
Treatment Summary: | We tested three chemical conditions: (1) PFOA, PFHxA and PFBA; (2) BPF and BPS; (3) A mix of our PFAS and BPX stocks, hereafter termed as Mix. Control reactors were treated with ethanol alone. Exposure started from day 9. All treatments were directly added into the bioreactor vessel via an inoculation port. |
