Comment typeDescription
Alternative ProductsEvent=Alternative splicing; Named isoforms=2; Name=1; IsoId=P30519-1; Sequence=Displayed; Name=2; IsoId=P30519-2; Sequence=VSP_055031;
Catalytic ActivityProtoheme + 3 AH(2) + 3 O(2) = biliverdin + Fe(2+) + CO + 3 A + 3 H(2)O.
FunctionHeme oxygenase cleaves the heme ring at the alpha methene bridge to form biliverdin. Biliverdin is subsequently converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase. Under physiological conditions, the activity of heme oxygenase is highest in the spleen, where senescent erythrocytes are sequestrated and destroyed. Heme oxygenase 2 could be implicated in the production of carbon monoxide in brain where it could act as a neurotransmitter.
InductionHeme oxygenase 2 activity is non-inducible.
Sequence CautionSequence=W38932; Type=Frameshift; Positions=82; Evidence={ECO:0000305};
SimilarityBelongs to the heme oxygenase family. {ECO:0000305}.
SimilarityContains 2 HRM (heme regulatory motif) repeats. {ECO:0000305}.
Subcellular LocationMicrosome. Endoplasmic reticulum.
