Comment typeDescription
Alternative ProductsEvent=Alternative splicing; Named isoforms=2; Name=1; IsoId=Q9NPF2-1; Sequence=Displayed; Name=2; Synonyms=C4S-1A; IsoId=Q9NPF2-2; Sequence=VSP_012992;
Biophysicochemical PropertiesKinetic parameters: KM=0.5 uM for PAPS {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15628971}; KM=2.1 mM for chondroitin {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15628971};
Catalytic Activity3'-phosphoadenylyl sulfate + chondroitin = adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + chondroitin 4'-sulfate. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10781601, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11056388}.
DiseaseNote=A chromosomal aberration involving CHST11 is found in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemias. Translocation t(12;14)(q23;q32) with IgH. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15273723}.
FunctionCatalyzes the transfer of sulfate to position 4 of the N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) residue of chondroitin. Chondroitin sulfate constitutes the predominant proteoglycan present in cartilage and is distributed on the surfaces of many cells and extracellular matrices. Can also sulfate Gal residues in desulfated dermatan sulfate. Preferentially sulfates in GlcA->GalNAc unit than in IdoA->GalNAc unit. Does not form 4, 6- di-O-sulfated GalNAc when chondroitin sulfate C is used as an acceptor.
PtmN-glycosylated; required for activity and stability. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15628971}.
SimilarityBelongs to the sulfotransferase 2 family. {ECO:0000305}.
Subcellular LocationGolgi apparatus membrane {ECO:0000250}; Single-pass type II membrane protein {ECO:0000250}.
Tissue SpecificityWidely expressed. Highly expressed in spleen, thymus, bone marrow, peripheral blood leukocytes, lymph node, heart, brain, lung and placenta. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10781601, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11056388}.
